ICTFC Under 16 Squad
Following on from our youth sides success at the Como Cup at Easter (Under 15's) and in Orkney in June (Under 12's), the Under 16's made it a hat-trick of tournament wins by lifting the Barcelona Cup 2010 at the weekend. The boys flew out from Scotland last Monday for the iconic Spanish city and were placed in the group stages with two Brazilian teams and a Spanish side.
The first game took place on Tuesday and despite the hot temperatures the boys got the tournament off to a great start beating Esporte Uniao CCSP from Brazil 6-0 with goals coming from Sean Napier (2), Calum Ferguson (2), Liam Polworth and Ryan Christie.
The next day we continued our good form this time defeating Intermontale from Brazil 8-1 with a professional performance, goals were scored by Liam Polworth (2), Ryan Watson (2), Ryan Christie, Aiden Drever, Calum Ferguson and Kyle Whyte.
Our final group match took place on Thursday morning against local side Barceloneta CF and despite a quiet start to the game a strong second half performance ensured the boys came away with a 6-1 victory to top the group. This time the goals were scored by Ryan Christie (2), Andrew Skinner, Ryan Watson, Calum Ferguson and Kyle Whyte.
The knockout stages began later that day and the boys were drawn against Santa Maria, however the Brazilians were no match for our boys and we overpowered them 9-0. Kyle Whyte and Sean Napier both bagged four goals each with Liam Polworth also on target.
The quarter finals on Friday morning saw us paired against Winner Match another team from Brazil and the youngsters defeated them 3-1 in a match which was more comfortabale than the scoreline suggests. Aiden Drever, Calum Ferguson and Liam Polworth scoring the goals.
The semi final took place on Friday evening on a pitch overlooking the Nou Camp. Rocarsa F.P from Valencia were our opponents and this was certainly our toughest test of the tournament with the boys showing great restraint against some intimidating tactics, not only from their opposing players but also from the watching spectators. We missed a number of early chances, in a game we should have wrapped up by half-time but no breakthrough could be found. The game moved straight into penalty kicks which we won 4-2, scorers being Kyle Whyte, Liam Polworth, Marc Noble and Sean Napier. Goalkeeper Scott Mathieson saved one of their spot kicks.
On Saturday morning the boys faced Centro Tecnofutbol from Barcelona in the final and comfortably defeated the Spanish side 3-1 with goals from Kyle Whyte, Ryan Christie and Liam Polworth, allowing us to lift the trophy as worthy winners.
