We welcomed Dunfermline to the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium this afternoon knowing that a win and defeats for Dundee and Ross County could see us clinch the 1st Division today. With Grant Munro and Lee Cox suspended Manager Terry Butcher was forced into making changes. Nauris Bulvitis came in at centre back with a place for Roy McBain in the centre of midfield, Richie Foran took over the captains armband.
It took until the 26th minute for the first real incident of note to happen, a long diagonal ball out of the Dunfermline half sent Nicky Phinn in behind Russell Duncan and clean through on Ryan Esson with Russell protesting the Pars midfielder had used a hand to control the ball. Phinn then chipped the ball over Esson into the net but thankfully referee Willie Collum blew for handball and booked Phinn.
Just before the break it Dunfermline that came close to breaking the deadlock, a Willie Gibson free kick from the right went right across the face of goal to the back post for defender Andy Dowie but he fired wide of goal. An Adam Rooney headed knock down presented Eric Odhiambo with a chance but his snap shot went wide of goal from 18 yards.
Half-time score: ICT 0 - Dunfermline 0
Two minutes into the second half we spurned a great chance for the first goal, Jonny Hayes swung over a corner from the right and Ross Tokely rose highest but his header was blocked by goalkeeper Chris Smith. The rebound fell straight to Nauris Bulvitis but his effort was blocked by the feet of Smith as he lay on the ground.
With 55 minutes played we took the lead, a through ball from Ross Tokely picked out the run of Adam Rooney behind the Dunfermline defence and he showed great composure to lob the ball over the onrushing Chris Smith into the net.
Dunfermline attempted to hit back right away but Ryan Esson was alert to Willie Gibson's left footed drive and tipped the ball over the bar for a corner kick which came to nothing.
Just after the hour mark we made it 2-0, Eric Odhiambo produced a great run skipping past a few challenges before releasing Richie Foran on the left hand side of the box and he side footed the ball under the diving Chris Smith.
Jonny Hayes was replaced Dani Sanchez in the 72nd minute. Two minutes later Adam Rooney let fly with a dipping 25 yard volley but Chris Smith produced a great save to tip the ball over the bar.
Robert Eagle entered the fray three minutes before the end coming on for Eric Odhiambo then Lionel Djebi-Zadi replaced Richie Foran. The final whistle sounded shortly afterwards but with Dundee picking up a point at Morton the title could not be secured.
