 Match Report

After a series of postponements in the league and cup we finally took to the field this evening in the 4th round of the Active Nation Scottish Cup against Motherwell at home.  Manager Terry Butcher made three changes to the side that drew against Dundee on Boxing Day in the league.  Ross Tokely returned from injury at left back, Russell Duncan came back into the middle of the park with Jonny Hayes starting on the right hand side.  Dropping out was the suspended Lionel Djebi-Zadi, Eric Odhiambo who went onto the bench and Stuart Duff who has returned to Aberdeen after a loan spell.

The opening period of the game was very quiet with both teams sizing each other up.  The first real incident of note took until the 21st minute to come, and with it we squandered a decent opening.  Richie Foran broke clear on the right side and his low cross into the box was initially missed by Adam Rooney at the front post but fell kindly to Dani Sanchez in front of goal.  However he looked surprised to see the ball come to him and somehow he put the ball wide of goal.

Five minutes later and Motherwell hit back with a chance, Lee Cox was disposed outside the box and that allowed Keith Lasley to feed in striker Lukas Jutkiewicz.  He lined up a shot but Ryan Esson came quickly out to narrow the angle and blocked the effort.

Jonny Hayes appeared to pick up an injury and he was replaced by Dougie Imrie five minutes before the interval.  Within minutes we had taken the lead, a Dougie Imrie corner to the back post was headed back across goal by Ross Tokely.  Adam Rooney volleyed the ball goalwards but saw his effort blocked on the line but defender Nauris Bulvitis was on hand to force the ball home into the net.

Half-time score: ICT 1 (Bulvitis 42 mins) - Motherwell 0

Substitute Jamie Murphy looked lively when he came on and three minutes into the second half he forced Ryan Esson into a save at his front post after the striker had breached our back four.  Shortly afterwards a fine run and cross by Richie Foran on the left presented Dougie Imrie with a good chance at the back post but he headed wide with the goal begging.

With 53 minutes gone Nauris Bulvitis picked up a yellow card from referee Iain Brines for a late challenge on Jim O'Brien.  Lee Cox let fly on the 56th minute with a 25 yard drive but the ball sailed over the bar.

On the 61st minute mark we extended our lead, Russell Duncan strode forward on the counter attack and did well to hold onto the ball and then release Dougie Imrie on the right hand side of the box and despite the winger being on the ground injured seconds earlier, he stepped inside and fired into the bottom far corner of the net.

Six minutes later Robert Eagle replaced Dani Sanchez and he could of made an instant impression straight away.  A neat Richie Foran flick set Eagle free in the box but his low shot was straight into the arms of Motherwell goalkeeper John Ruddy.

Referee Brines brought a halt to proceedings two minutes after the 90 minute mark and we deserveably progressed into the 5th round to face Kilmarnock.
