RESERVE REPORT
It was a team mixed with experience and youth that entertained a youthful Rangers side at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium today with Graeme Smith, John Fleck and Aaron Niguez the most recognised faces for the Gers. Despite going into a two goal lead we contrived to throw away all three points in the final game of the season going down 3-2.
Zander Sutherland was making his first appearance in about six months after a knee injury and Ryan Esson took a place between the sticks with Russell Duncan captaining the side. With 15 minutes played we came close to opening the scoring. Garry Wood was fouled outside of the box and Iain Vigurs free kick had Graeme Smith in trouble but we couldn't force the spilled shot home.
On the half hour mark we took the lead with some fine build up play, Zander Sutherland released Garry Wood, who drove at the Rangers defence then slipped a pass into Adam Rooney's path who had slipped his marker and he produced a smart finish into the bottom corner of the net.
Rangers goalkeeper Graeme Smith then produced a good save to keep his side in the game when Zander Sutherland played a one two with Adam Rooney and let fly from 25 yards but Smith pushed the ball round the post for a corner kick.
Four minutes into the second period we extended our lead, Iain Vigurs played a low cross into the box from the left which was touched on by Garry Wood at the front post and Gregg Wylde was forced to put the ball into his own net under severe pressure by Adam Rooney at the back post.
Nine minutes later Rangers pulled a goal back when after Thierry Gathuessi gave away a needless corner kick, Steven Lennon pounced upon a rebound from a Jamie Ness header to scramble the ball home.
Within a minute it was 2-2 with Steven Lennon placing a penalty into the bottom corner after Pavels Mihadjuks handled in the penalty box. It was all Rangers and they took the lead for the first time in the match on the 65ht minute. Aaron Niguez played a defence splitting through ball for John Fleck to race onto and he made no mistake blasting the ball past the onrushing Ryan Esson.
In the last minute we spurned a great opportunity to nick a point, Russell Duncan floated a cross over from the left which was flicked on by Michael Finnis to Adam Rooney who was standing all on his own in the six yard box but his header lacked the pace and direction required and Graeme Smith gathered easily.
